Picture About KARAS, Sperie

Sperie Karas is a native Ohioan and as a young man had the good fortune to study with Charley Wilcoxon, who made an important impression on what directions his musical future would take.  In high school; in addition to his involvement with the school musical activities, drum activities, drum competitions, etc, Sperie had his own Big Band, which became quite well known in Northern Ohio.  He graduated from the Juilliard School in New York and during that time formed his own Jazz Ensemble which performed at all the important jazz clubs, such as Birdland. Another high point in this period was Sperie's association with the Sauter-Finegan Orchestra. When Eddie Sauter was invited to become the leader of the SWF Big Band in Baden-Baden, Bermany, he asked Sperie to be his drummer.  The next important move for Sperie, after several years of "freelancing" throughout Europe, was to Cologne, where he took over the drum chair of the WDR Big Band. This was an exciting time for him, playing and getting to know many of the top international musicians on his concerts in Europe and Asia. In this period and right up to the present, Sperie has had a busy and rewarding teaching schedule at some of the prestigious conservatories in Germany. Sperie and his wife spend their time between Florida and Germany.
