Edmund Haines was born in 1914 in Ottumwa, Iowa. He received his Bachelor of Music degree from Kansas City Conservatory in 1934, and a M.M. and Ph.D. from the Eastman School of Music, the later in 1941. Since 1948, Mr. Haines has been on the faculty of Sarah Lawrence College. He was awarded a Pulitzer Price in 1941 for his First Symphony. In addition to several other awards, he has received two successive Guggenheim Fellowships, in 1956-57 and 1957-58.
