About Reverie and Country Dance
This solo was composed at the request of Steve Taylor, Band Director at Hillsdale Schools, Jeromesville, Ohio to be performed at a career day event by Jeffrey Rathbun, oboist in the Cleveland Symphony who was engaged as a speaker. The request was for an oboe solo at the ability level of developing oboe students that would appeal to them - and provide an alternative to the usual Baroque and Classical Viennese literature. Reverie and Country Dance is the result. The two short pieces contrast each other, the Reverie being a lyrical piece in a nostalgic mood, followed by a European style Country Dance. The keys are F and Bb major and duration is just under 4 minutes. Range is from high Bb down to G, 2nd line of the staff, and there are enough rests throughout to rest the embouchure. The melodies are quite delightful with appeal to performers and listeners. OMEA Class: B
