About Olde English Ayres (arr. Hall)
This woodwind quintet has been created to fill the need for literature for this standard ensemble of mixed woodwind instruments (including the French Horn) at a level of difficulty that is realistic for less experienced performers. This particular quintet also gives opportunity to the performers to experience two of the beautiful and exciting songs that we have inherited from England - "Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes" and "Oh Dear, What Can the Matter Be." The texts of both of these songs are based on the most important emotion in the world - love! The contrasting styles of the two songs demonstrate how music can express both the beauty and the excitement of young love. Both songs are in 6/8 meter but are entirely different in tempo and style, the first being lyrical and the second light and frivolous. Ranges of all instruments are very practical for this level, and an optional bass clarinet part is included to replace the bassoon if necessary.
