About Early American Songs
The three songs included in this quartet came from England, Ireland, and Appalachia. We can call them early American songs because they were brought here by early immigrants and incorporated into our heritage of music. "Duke Street" is a hymn tune which is to be played in the style of a processional march. "Johnny Has Gone For A Soldier", sometimes called "Buttermilk Hill", is a lament to be played in a melancholy lyrical style. and the quartet ends with a happy-go-lucky barn dance tune, "Little Liza Jane." This quartet affords a lesson in history as well as in music. It can also be very effectively played using French horn on the third part.
