About Chant and Jubilo
This was a commissioned work for the Shelby, Ohio bands for an unusual quartet instrumentation of trumpet, 2 trombones and tuba. However, it works very well with French horn on the 1st trombone parts, and serves as an opportunity to include a tuba player in a quartet. The Chant is a somber lament for four equal voices in the key of c minor with a surprise ending in E-flat major which serves as a modulation to the “Jubilo” in that key. As you might guess, the Jubilo is joyful and light hearted for contrast. Total duration is just under 3 minutes. Ranges are very acceptable for this level. Articulations and dynamics are well marked on score and parts to aid in rehearsal. This quartet offers a great musical experience for young players.
