About Chorale Variations on Dix (arr. Hall)
Dix is the name given to a familiar hymn tune that has been set to two familiar texts - "For the Beauty of the Earth" and "As With Gladness Men of Old." The tune, first stated as a chorale, is followed by three contrasting variations. Variation 1 is in 6/8 meter and is in a rather sprightly tempo and style somewhat like a jig. Variation 2, in cut time, is maestoso in style with high instruments playing a duet, alternating with low instrument duets, and Variation 3 is like a processional march but in 5/4 meter building up to a dramatic ending. Range of the instruments will not pose a problem, but a good understanding of rhythm is quite necessary to play the variations accurately. This is an excellent quartet for concert, contest and church, and can be performed also with horn replacing the first trombone part.
