About
Stephen Foster's Ladies
(arr. Hall)
Stephen Collins Foster composed over 175 songs that are considered America’s folk songs. Two of his best known and loved songs are both named after ladies - Jeannie With The Light Brown Hair, and O Susanna - the later becoming the gold rush song as it dates to the 1849 era in American history. These two pieces compliment and contrast each other. Position playing is essential in all parts. The first part lies in the high range, ending on a high B natural. Parts are rhythmically independent, and lyrical playing is essential to do justice to Jeannie. This is a great addition to cello ensemble literature.
