About Reverie
Reverie, by Claude Debussy, is loved by audiences the world over. This early 1890 composition encapsulates the beauty, gentle boldness, and tender dynamics of Debyss's creativity. In this arrangement designed to feature the pianist as soloist with choral accompaniment, Jackson Berkey takes Debussy's original work and cradles the piano with blankets of voices. Even without lyrics, one can hear poetry.

Historically, by the time that Debussy's opera Pelleas et Melisande (1895) was produced in 1902, or, even more importantly, his orchestral L'apres-midi d'un faune (1895) was danced in 1912, the music world had been reshaped. The 1913 Paris premiere of Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps caused a monumental tectonic shift within the music world.

Jackson's and my love affair with Debussy's magical music blossomed through our sharing of his piano gems and exquisite songs. His marriage of poetry - especially of Baudelaire or Paul Verlaine or even Debussy's own beautiful lyrics - further developed the "impressionistic French sound" with tone poems of majestic grace.

In the setting originally created for a 2007 concert tour of Soli Deo Gloria Cantorum, the composer-pianist takes this lovely solo and gently layers expressive voices throughout. Let your love affair with Debussy increase as roles are reversed and you feature your fine pianist in this unusual choral setting.
